I've considered myself to be part of the left since my late teens or early twenties. But, there was always part of myself that found some sense of superiority in being skeptical of those further left than I was. The past five years have been a humbling experience.
I keep coming back to this: My Marxist sociology profs in college understood more about the country and its dangers and dark sides than anyone else I've ever encountered.

Time after time I've found that reality more closely resembled the picture painted by the smartest people in the even-further-left. The dangers of fascism rising again and the illegitimacy of policing, in particular, are examples where I was too tepid, and they were right.
