Since it's Butch Appreciation Day, may I just say how much I appreciate butches?
The communities of butch women and trans men often seem at odds (though individually, I see no evidence that butch women and trans men can't/don't become friends). Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd say the root cause of this is that butch women are way more masculine than trans men.
Butchness is about masculinity in a way that trans-masculinity isn't. Some trans men find butch women's masculinity intimidating (I know I do). Some butch women don't really grok transmasculinity's embrace of a spectrum of presentations, including femme ones.
The embrace of masculinity, the joy of it, is what I value most about butch women! As an AFAB man, having role models for joyous and positive masculinity that deviate from cis/het men is so important, and for me butch women are the natural place to look for that.
