As everyone else is pointing out- and Mounk himself nods at (!?) it was objectively more dangerous to challenge orthodox opinions then.
Now, but the POTUS is the one silencing people through force, for an ideology. At least with McCarthy there were hearings. I don’t know anything more dangerous than being disappeared.
