I just can't stop thinking about satire, and what I thought it did, and what I'm starting to suspect it really does. I thought satire was exaggerating the world in a way that makes us see the contradictions and painful hypocrisies more clearly.

But maybe satire isn't about exaggeration. Maybe it's more real than realism. Maybe it's holding up a mirror in a way that makes it possible to see reality from just barely enough remove not to despair completely.
