It can help even if the trauma is ongoing, depending on what the trauma is. But, yes, ending the traumatic experience would be the very best thing.

Yep. There's a reason I dropped out of my EMDR in the middle of the planned treatment course (UK NHS only gives you 12 weeks). Luckily, what I did pick up from that has been enough that after the fact, I've been able to use it to fix a lot of my PTSD issues independently.

I tried EMDR. It didn’t work for me. I have a psychiatrist and am on meds. I’m still stuck holding this f*ing trauma. I don’t know what to do with it
