When is your sanctimony about free speech and illiberalism going to reckon with the people like me, who may never climb another a rung on the ladder because of elite, connected people like Jesse telling editors that our gender identity is disqualifying?

wow that sounds like an insanely bigoted thing to say -- can you point me to where i said it?

Full quote is too long for twitter. A fair paraphrase would be: Transgender people are subject to groupthink. They're the right people to hire to talk about how hard it is not to be able to go into bathrooms but not to write about the science like [I, Jesse Singal] do.

I said that all groups are susceptible to groupthink and that on the specific question of desistance, there was some of it in the trans community. In the same paragraph, if memory serves, I gave an example of a similar issue with my own group, American Jews. Of course American

I've written about desistence, Jesse. I interviewed Steensma and all the usual suspects just like you did. I will put my work up against yours any day of the week and defy anyone to say mine is more biased.

You can find a science writer who is trans, though. I'm one of them- although I haven't found as much work as I'd like I really will put my science writing against Jesse's on any terms you'd like except for number of pieces.

Jesse spoke as if they were incompatible. Whatever he says now, he was denying trans writers can produce rigorous, well researched articles on these topics. This has consequences. Editors come to view someone like me with suspicion, like an activist not a professional.

yes but there's literally nothing in the note itself that says that, is all i'm saying. and it pivots immediately to explain a group of stories that trans would *would always* be better-equipped to handle. you are also, um, slightly overestimating my sway with editors

lol. I'm not saying you're some all powerful puppet master stopping me from getting jobs. Just that there's a climate in the industry that views trans writers as activists rather than professionals hurts us, for real, and you got caught contributing to it.

I think there’s a valid point here - unless you’re a member of a group who actively speaks out against your group, people assume you to be singularly focused on advancing your group. It’s a tough scenario cause there certainly are those cases, but it can’t be all....

However, it seems to be hard to prove without first tap dancing to prove yourself
