There is truth to this, but I also think that one reason some people, e.g. the Harper's petition, are more vocally concerned about debate-stifling "from the left" is because everyone who could be persuaded by a Harper's petition already agrees that right-wing harrassment is bad
I'd put it a little differently. They think right-wing harassment, which doesn't target them, can never change and its targets should accept it without complaint, but left-wing harassment, which they happen to be targets of, is destroying the foundation of our democracy.
I guess it depends on who "they" are, because there are signers of that petition who I agree fit that description and others of whom I think it would be very ungenerous.
Signing the list might be a reason to reevaluate your priors of the people who chose to sign it. "There were very good people" in the crowd if people doing a shitty thing is an argument with a terrible track record.
