As a writer is it better for your career to get more clicks on your articles (and therefore write clickbait headlines)? Probably right?
I think it’s now safe to admit: I wrote my most controversial headline. Many who defended the article blamed my nonexistent headline writer for the controversy, some going so far as to advise me that Slate had failed me by putting such a clickbait-y headline on my piece.

It's a mixed bag, but that's more true than not. It's also just really hard to know what will pique people's curiosity vs enrage them vs be ignored. By the time I wrote the headline everyone hated I'd had loads of headlines I thought were really cheeky go nowhere.
