This makes a ton of sense to anyone who's spent time around 12 step communities- reshaping an addicts social network around recovery can work extremely well. AA built that capability and I don't know how we could even begin to replicate it.

This seems right to me. My sense has always been that AA, while overly dogmatic and unnecessarily critical of other valuable approaches to recovery, has nonetheless provided real and major benefits for countless people. I have family who would surely be dead if it didn't exist.
