This was when I was making my living as a butch lesbian writer. I'd had a big article that seemed to touch a nerve. I also had a lot of misunderstandings and negative ideas about trans people, so Cathy wasn't insane to think I'd make a good convert to her cause.

She sent me a friend request on facebook and messaged to express admiration for my article. This wasn't an uncommon occurrence at that exact moment, and I'd never heard of her (and only barely heard of TERFs) at the time.

I started to realize something was up when she offered me... help? protection? She thought I was being harrassed. I was not being harassed. I'd written a popular article about how great it was to be a butch lesbian. Everyone was being very kind and I was on top of the world.

So I went to her FB page to try and figure out what her deal was. Soon I was defending trans people in her comments and then, within 2-3 hours, she blocked me. I just checked and I am still blocked to this day.

There was so much ugliness and hate on her page that even I, a transition-skeptical self-hating trans man (at the time), saw with perfect clarity that she and anyone like her were the bad guys, and I needed to steer the fuck clear.

I credit her with helping me realize I was trans. Because if her page hadn't been so angry and full of hate maybe I'd have gone down the TERF road myself. It still took years to come out to myself, but at least I knew who the bad guys and who the good guys were.

Anyway, I looked her up and it sounds like she stood up to the GCs who are cozying up to right wingers, and is maybe persona non grata in the modern right-wing-allied anti-trans movement now? Funny thing, life.
