If you missed it, over the weekend I wrote a thread on new research on possible genetic roots of gender dysphoria.https://twitter.com/e_urq/status/1226589802738270208 …

And one final big picture: Transgender activism and engagement with science and scientists has, at least in this case, led to researchers and journalists being more sensitive about the complexities and risks of this type of work. I think that's a very good thing. /end

i read both the article & the thread now (thank you for retweeting it) & it put my mind at ease, although i disagree with you on this screen here, if i'm interpreting what you mean correctly. it makes sense to me that gender is a mix of social construction, psychology & geneticspic.twitter.com/ooNG9Ioqf8

like, i'm agender. i identify as masculine because masculinity as a social construct is associated with having a penis & body hair, which i want but it doesnt make me a man anymore than it would a trans woman who wants to keep her penis & body hair

being nb but having bottom & top dysphoria, there's at least 2 components here for me, 1 is involving my body & the other is psychological because if there was another way to describe myself better than "man" or "masc" i'd use that. that's what makes gender a social construct

lwhat makes a man? what makes a woman? if a man or woman can do everything each other can, the categories are arbitrary like, not to say we should abolish gender but it seems gender only matters because it's emphasized so much socially, like we raise & treat genders as different

but that's my 2 cents. there's a lot more shit going on & i haven't studied gender philosophically or biologically & i definitely dont understand every other trans person's experience, this is just ideas that make sense to me with my experiences

I think our experiences are quite similar. I don't call myself NB bc the label has never resonated with me, but I think of myself as an agender man bc all I have is bodily dysphoria, I've never "felt" like either a woman or a man, except in a playacting kind of way.

If I had a natal male body type, I can't imagine I'd have questioned my gender or thought anything of it. If I'd be a binary cis man, I don't see why I should consider myself nonbinary as a trans man. I pursued a binary transition and live as a man, not a nonbinary person.

But, agender resonates bc I don't really feel myself to be any gender, and things like pronouns aren't an important part of my gender identity, just having a male-passing body (which ideally would just be a natal male body, but transition has greatly eased my dysphoria).

yeah, for me, i actually think i might still be dysphoric if i was born with a penis. like, i like my hips & i like having a vagina (a lot), i just dont like it when people see my hips or know i have a vagina & think i'm a woman.
