Can we please freaking pull back on talking about things without linking to them or being explicit enough to make it easy for people to find them, because we're angry and don't want to give someone we don't like clicks?

Look, if it's white nationalists, I get it. If it's a controversial science fiction short story, do you think MAYBE we could discuss our qualms while giving people the info to find it and judge for themselves?

After searching unsuccessfully for "attack helicopter" yesterday to find out what everyone was talking about, I finally found the thing through Jesse Singal of all people.

I didn't read the whole thing, because it was long. I skimmed enough to get the general idea and have no particularly strong feelings, pro or con. For goodness' sake, this isn't great evil whose name must not be spoken, it's a science fiction short story with a cheeky phrase.

As pointed out by @fakedansavage, I should have linked! A short story by Isabel Fall, the official version of which which was removed at the request of the author after it offended some trans folks, available here:http://archive.is/oXDEt

i would think, at least in this particular case, people mostly didn't link to the story because of the immense amount of harassment she was facing. in other situations, people seem to want to avoid being caught by name searching narcissists. everybody sucks, essentially.

I just think it's gone too far. Let the narcissists worry about their narcissism, let the public figures worry about being harassed, and give ordinary people the information they need to understand what's going on.

i think it's a question of your reach on the platform. if you have tens of thousands of followers, you bear some responsibility for what they do when you post stuff. i wouldn't want to contribute to somebody else's harassment. and i wouldn't want to incite my own, either.

I tend to think people are mostly responsible for themselves- although definitely don't be someone who amasses a harassment-inclined following. Ask your followers not to harass anyone, if necessary, but they're responsible for themselves.

listen, ayn rand, no but i do think that having achieved a certain level of internet clout makes you responsible for where you direct the slavering sycophantic hordes who hang on your every word. and asking them not to harass somebody isn't a particularly effective move, sadly.
