This is a sentiment that makes us feel good but is false, or at least a simplification that might lead you astray if you believe it in early transition. The truth is that medical transition is more like the death of one's previous self than is comfortable. https://twitter.com/lovevenustas/status/1214973010718924802 …

Caveats 1: Binary medical transition is the only transition I've experienced. Caveat 2: Transition in adulthood is the only transition I've experienced. (Adolescence is a bit like the death of one's child self anyway, which is why it makes everyone so uncomfortable.)

In early transition I told myself and others that it wasn't like my previous girl self was dying and a new male self was taking her place. But nearly 4 years in I have to admit that yeah, it actually feels a lot like that both for me and the people around me.

It's not just me, happier and more comfortable. I speak differently, I emote differently, I respond differently. I'm seen differently and treated differently by others. These are good, needed changes. But if you are in early transition, prepare yourself. It's quite a ride.
