I worked in high school curriculum for some years. The idea that being exposed to the careful, detailed, provocative discussions in the 1619 project would somehow be a step backwards for what gets taught in hs history...

high school history is incredibly biased towards patriotism and regurgitating facts. leading kids to question the typical triumphalism they're going to get from media is all to the good.

The only nuance in my grade school history was a teacher who wanted us to consider factors other than slavery as being as or more important to starting the Civil War. What these people mean is that the only place for nuance in pre-college history is in excusing slave holders.
