This article in @washingtonpost is a great start to explaining the kinds of situations I can't tell you about. Kids being overdiagnosed, becoming institutionalized, losing trust in adults, sometimes all but losing the will to advocate for themselves bc it's never worked before.
Before I became a foster parent, my first job out of college was staff at a residential program. Let me tell you- I loved the kids. Those were some great, amazing kids. But it was easy to see how the constant changing of staff and turnover was messing with them.
I made a goal to be a foster parent one day bc I wanted to take them home with me. Being a foster parent is a way better experience than residential staff. But kids should be with their own families whenever possible. To the extent I can support that I always will.
