We're often told accused of saying everything is transphobic as a way of shutting down legitimate arguments. I feel like it's high time to start putting together major themes in transphobic conspiracy theories into a list somewhere.

So in that interest, send me your transphobic tropes. Not anything as bland as "stuff transphobes say", like current slogans, TERF is a slur, sex not gender or whatever. I mean intrinsically transphobic tropes in terms of seeking to promote fear and hatred towards trans ppl.

One of the oldest ones I'm familiar with personally in the UK is the Trans Cabal thing. Julie Bindel has been pushing it since around 2005 (at least), and others have followed with similar afterwards.

The idea (much like "the gay agenda" not to mention numerous other conspiracy theories) is that some shadowy all powerful international organisation of trans people are busy pulling the strings of public policy for their own gain.

Another transphobic trope older than that even is of trans people as murderous perverts. The idea that trans people are fetishistic degenerates prone to violence goes back a long time but probably the most well known arena for this is in horror movies.

There are tangents on this in the claims that transgender women are using our access to women's toilets to steal used sanitary pads for fetishistic purposes. The idea is to associate us with filth, sexualised disgust and stigmas associated with mental illness.

Speaking of filth and sexualised disgust, the spectre of trans people as a threat to and grooming children is a very common one. The idea is that not only are we perverts and mutilators but that we recruit your children to be multilated and mutilate others https://twitter.com/FilthAlexis/status/1203713462028906497?s=19 …

I think people underestimate the toll of being everyone’s joke. Just saying “transgender” in a sneering way can be a laugh line, often with barely any setup. And, it’s another way anti-trans sentiment now lines up with anti-gay attitudes a few decades ago.
