The defenses of Trump that seem to be predominating lately are: 1. Trump had the power to do the bad thing under discussion. 2. Trump won't ultimately be removed from office because the Dems don't have the votes.

IOW, things are as bad as they can be without Republicans jumping ship. Defenses of the president's actions seem few and far between. It's possible this will be the state of affairs that holds until impeachment is over, but I think also likely that ship jumping comes next.
