But in my early thirties I started to deeply and profoundly doubt the ideal of small businesses. Bc, see, I worked for a couple small businesses. And I had friends and family who worked for small businesses.

Not to paint with a broad brush, but: Small businesses are mostly owned by evil psychos who get away with constant, egregious labor violations by being too small to regulate.

Small business owners openly discriminate in their hiring practices and get away with it bc they're small and the workers are poor. They steal time, they steal tips, they rant and terrorize. They enjoy holding your life in their hands and lord it over you.

Small businesses are, generally speaking, worse to work for than large businesses bc large businesses have at least some fear of regulators.

So, yeah. Worker collectives. Preferably ones large enough that there can be some smoothing of the ability of individuals to exploit small scale power dynamics.
