It's a confluence of low information meets convenience that just perpetually privileges those who are already in the system, such that those who vote are undeniably more influential even than higher-class non-voters.
This assumes that there are tuned in centrists who will definitely vote, but haven't made up their minds and might vote for Trump if the Democrat is too far left. My assumption is: Hatred of Trump can be absolutely counted on to motivate Dem leaning centrists....
... and Trump voters will vote Trump regardless. So, the Dems task is to motivate people who might not vote, or might vote for a third party. They should be taking centrists for granted, and courting the far left who are a bit more unpredictable. Not the other way around.
That's what I hope will be Trump's undoing. It's the optimistic outcome for sure. I think Obama has been put through the grinder of Washington so long, that he can only see the world through the Joe Manchin's and Kyrsten Sinema's, and not much else beyond.
