Impairment could apply if a person has obsessive thoughts of gender transition that interfere with their daily life, but again, that isn't automatically the case. You can be unimpaired and free of distress while still identifying as transgender

I think it would be helpful to spell out that a trans person can easily be "impaired" socially or professionally due to discrimination because of how they present. Internal turmoil and distress is not necessarily the source of impairment.

"a symptom of dysfunction in the indivudal" is the key phrase there (from a 2013 POV, but also a modern one for many, many folks.

A psychiatrist or psychologist in 2013 could very easily say- this person is experiencing impairment because of their cross-dressing behavior, a symptom of their GID. This is a perfectly valid way of interpreting the DSM-IV criteria.

I think I may have missed something, to not sure what. Don't know what point you're making here, and I think it's because I'm reading posts out of order or something, rather than being your fault.

At bottom is the fact that the second screenshot JS posted confirmed the first, while he seems to have thought it disproved it in some way. Whether we agree on that or disagree, I'm no longer sure.

In the first half of the 20th century, psychiatry was responsible for 50,000 lobotomies, many on patients that had nothing fundamentally "wrong" with them, so what you have is an attempt at a set of guidelines that avoid pathologizing differences in behavior, while recognizing...
