By the time my kids come to me, they've absorbed years of messages from peers, family, and all of society that they are bad and wrong. They may have been abused to try and make them conform to their birth assigned sex.

We give our kids one message- consistent support. We affirm people of all genders and expressions. They can present completely as their birth sex one day, as the opposite sex the next, and in between on the third. We love them as they are, no expectations or demands.

Above all we don't demand that they "pick" a gender and stick with it, that they have a binary gender, or that their expression match the gender they say they feel inside.

Conservatives are only just starting to say it: They think accepting gender nonconforming kids and loving them as they are is abuse. It will get louder and angrier and more insistent, and the laws may change to support them. And innocent kids will be terribly, irrevocably hurt.
