Anyone who is a regular Deadspin commenter or knows a regular Deadspin commenter: I'm writing about the Deadspin comment community for Slate. I want to speak with commenters, so get in touch!

I started reading their stuff during national service in 2006. I believe I was led there by a @BillSimmons mention on Page 2. Freshman year 07/08 at NYU it was already to where the best commenters had their blogs

KSK was the clear best. I don’t know when With Leather started but it was later. And Fire Joe Morgan wasn’t a direct Deadspin product but it felt connected.

07/08 Freshman year it was where I could read a KSK @DrewMagary @xmasape @Unsilent @mattufford piece out loud to our dorm room on Sundays and it would be reverently observed

The funny thing is: Being a commenter (and grabbing all the opportunities) then would’ve been super accessible to me, a freshman in NYC, around then. It did not feel that way. The talent level was super high and anyone who tried to putz around was just immediately throttled.

I feel like to explain that would only be possible by having someone explain the pre Kinja comment system, where you had to gain stars and approval and such. You ought to pursue that.

This plus a little Wikipedia is making what was once obscure to me clearer.

Again this is also all pre twitter. Only social network was Facebook and it was 2-3 years before you could post your status (which when it came was seen as a poor copy of early twitter). You came to the internet by typing in the URLs you wanted to read.

So your preference for websites was really much like your parents choosing newspapers and magazines, but you didn’t have to pay for it. You chose what you wanted to read by typing it in every morning and it was quite fun. No smartphones or push notifications either
