I understand the impulse to think a random person would approach politics with more humility and desire for public service than most pols, but also that the real problems with our system could be solved in more direct ways with less risk.

I wonder if there’s an argument for a mix of the two? I don’t know how else you can manage to wrest the levers of power from political dynasties and the wealthy.

The money in politics is the problem. To the extent politicians aren't the people we want in their roles, it's the money/fundraising system attracting the wrong sorts.
