Watched the first few episodes of Tales of the City. What's up with the actor playing Jake? (They're NB.) Is this what we're supposed to want? I'd much rather have a cis male actor playing a trans man than a nonbinary actor, personally, but maybe others don't feel that way.
If you care about the actor's life experience, the life experience of an NB person isn't closer to that of a trans man than a cis man. If you care about optics for interviews & red carpet, they/them pronouns for the actor gives a subtle message that Jake wasn't really a guy.

All I care about, personally, is the latter. Every time that actor does press, every time they appear in public, their pronouns will undermine the gender of their character, the same way having a cis woman do press would (although obviously not as bad). That's fucked up!

A stereotype about trans masc ppl is we're an interchangeable mishmash of confused kids following trends. They/them, he/him, who can keep up- we change pronouns every few weeks anyway. Casting an AFAB NB to play a trans man reinforces that stereotype.
