I've always had a soft spot for Catholicism, and the reason for that is that they're genuinely good thinkers. In the case of the recent statement about trans and nonbinary people, it's instructive to see that they also deny the existence of intersex people.

By Catholic logic, God created two and only two biological sexes, sex = gender, and therefore there can't be such a thing as someone who is psychologically between genders. But, what if biology says there are people between sexes?

If the biological reality is that there are people who fall outside of the two sexes (and, spoiler alert, there are), then it would logically follow that there would also be people who psychologically fall outside the two genders.

Since Catholics are so good at logic, they can see this. It glares out at them. It is a fundamental threat to their ideology. And so, even though it's nonsensical and distracting, they HAVE TO deny intersex conditions exist along with denials of trans and nonbinary existence.
