Been thinking about this more, and I think what it comes down to is that sensitivity measures, particularly inclusive language and pronouns, are easy and fairly superficial things that organizations can do to sound trans inclusive...https://twitter.com/e_urq/status/1130850013255356416 …

"Trans men and NBs" is too broad for these conversations. Someone who presents nearly full time as a woman but would prefer if their pronouns were respected at the gynocologist has very different concerns than a man with vaginal atrophy deciding whether to ask for a pap smear.

...but when it comes to people who have medically transitioned, we have concrete health needs related to what surgeries we've had or not had and what hormone balance we've had for how long. These are a lot more complicated, and they vary based on the individual.

Awareness and inclusion campaigns often don't address the fact that many trans people have concrete reproductive health needs that differ from cis folks.

These measures feel superficially PC, rather than useful, to those for whom proper pronouns are no longer a daily issue, but do have health needs providers are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with.

Yes. Recognizing that it's not just cis women that have these needs is a start, but the bigger issue is that most providers have no clue what to do with trans patients. I've even encountered this at LGBT clinics.

Exactly! Docs have seemed flustered and unsure, often saying I probably knew more than them, in every place I've been, including well known LGBT-oriented clinics. Their education meant they had the pronouns and inclusive language down, but it seemed not to go further than that.

I mean, I have great docs who know their stuff, but that's because they're specialists, which isn't available to folks in like, 90% of the USA.
