I've never been the sort of radical who calls for abolishing the police, but the more I think about what policing does and doesn't do the more I think it needs to be justified, rather than assumed to be necessary or positive.

Times in my life when I was in danger or a victim there was never a cop around to help me. Times in my life when there was a cop around it was an experience of inconvenience, uselessness, or danger.

I've definitely had, like, a FEW times where police presence was reassuring/helpful to me. But they're few and far between, and more often than not their presence is a negative.
