A young woman I know did survival sex work when she was kicked out and living on the street. Survival sex work is a complicated issue. I would have preferred her not to have to take those kinds of risks or be in that kind of bind. But seeing her one dimensionally, as a tragic victim, might make you feel more virtuous, but it does her no good.
We had to do a training on sex trafficking to become foster parents, and it was worse than useless for the real life situation of having to nurture a young person who was forced into sex work by circumstance.
Focusing on evil traffickers lets the rest of us off the hook for the ways our society fails young people who end up in a situation where sex work feels like their best choice.
I'm grateful to have been following sex workers like @mistressmatisse, @lychaxo, @AllyBrinken, because unlike the moralistic anti-trafficking training it gave me the ability to understand and respect the complicated pride that this young woman feels about her past.
