I don't believe it any more, both because I know plenty of masculine, female-identified people who can model healthy masculinity without being men, and because I'm a lot more skeptical of seeing children's psychological needs as all the same or similar.
Yeah, exactly. I love having an opportunity to confront this idea that children being raised by women need a jury rigged dad-figure shoehorned into the picture (or vice versa). But it's hard to fault everyone who has this idea because it's so much conventional wisdom.
