People with depression take anti-depressants, people with bipolar disorder take lithium (and other drugs). Trans people take hormones and change our social presentation. Why do you think saying it's a mental illness means it's a choice, or that we don't deserve treatment?
If being transgender is a mental illness that doesn't change anything. The only known effective treatment for it is still transition.
