I actually think there are two overlapping phenomena. 1. As below, puberty is a time when dysphoria manifests. It did for me. 2. Adolescence as a time for healthy, normal exploration of one's identity and role.https://twitter.com/LaurakBuzz/status/1040584638970966017 …

If a young person experiments with a new hair cut, dyeing their hair, wearing more masculine clothes or trying a skirt or dress, and perhaps trying a new nickname or even different pronouns, that's not evidence of an epidemic of misdiagnosed gender dysphoria.

If that young person goes on to identify as trans and transition, that's a good, healthy outcome for a trans youth. If that young person experiments for a while and does not go on to transition, that's a good, healthy outcome for a cis youth.

The panic is that normal exploration, experimentation with different fashion trends, and trying out new roles equals gender dysphoria diagnoses equals medical transition. It does not.

It's great that androgyny is coming back into style, after a decade or two where gender roles were very strictly policed. But, every kid who cuts their hair or wears a skirt and hangs out with similar styled youth isn't being turned trans.
