I didn’t like McCain’s politics. I think his reputation as a straight talker and truth teller was exaggerated, if not completely unearned. But because I knew him as a timid creature of mainstream politics, I can see what an unusual moment this is.

The job of the press, honestly, should be to highlight this strangeness, and explain it to Americans for whom the funeral is breaking through more than other news events. Not collectively shrug and say “isn’t this wild, folks?” like a late night tv host.
