Long thread in which I over-share on the internet to complain about a gap in the literature because I'm feeling introspective and also kind of bored /1

Part of a panel discussion, I moved my chair back, a leg slipped off the raised platform, and I fell on the floor. The topic of the panel was “dignity”.

Was waiting in the lounge of famous university when a grad student sat next to me. She asked me what I worked on. I told her. She then spent 10 minutes talking to me about a terrible speaker she heard two years before at the university on my topic. Reader, I was that speaker.

20 minutes into a conversation about the Rubber Hand Illusion, I realized the person I was talking to had a prosthetic hand

I was invited to give a talk sponsored by several universities in the same city. So, anticipating a large audience they reserved an auditorium. 6 people came, 3 of whom were my hosts.

Receiving a text from a friend, when I was making my kids breakfast in New Haven, "hey, lots of anticipation for your keynote - everyone is already seated. Need directions to the auditorium?"

Related: I was giving a job talk and I opened the talk by mentioning how nice it was to visit X. Folks, we weren't in X, we were in Y.

Answering a question in Q&A from Dana Scott at an ASL meeting, not realising who he was, and replying by talking about some really interesting recent work by Dana Scott that he might be interested in. At the end of my answer, he replied, ‘Thanks - I’ll look into that’.

This one time I existed in a place with people, and had to undergo the inarticulable torment of being known as a being unto myself amidst others with all the infinitude of my wretchedness bearing down upon us. Awful. Don't like to think about it anymore.

"Well, good luck and God speed to those whose philosophical mission is explaining why they are right to their own satisfaction. But if you want philosophy to help you enter into the lifeworld of others quite different from yourself this cannot be enough."

Hey - what's your most intense professional cringe moment? Mine: I was a visiting speaker at Fancy U. Dinner plans had gotten as far as making a reservation and telling me, but apparently no farther. I ended up sitting by myself at a table for 8 for 2 hours.

“But I am a philosopher, and the job of philosophers is to confront issues dispassionately, guided only by reason and evidence.” Based on the evidence provided by actually reading philosophy, I’m guided by reason to the conclusion that this description fits no one.

Yesterday my favorite doctor was asking about recent weight loss and somehow the conversation morphed into her giving me amazing advice for where to buy pants that will flatter a skinny/nonexistent ass. I like to think this is what they mean by 'treat the whole person'.

Once at a Fancy Conference a group of Fancy Law Profs asked me my favorite way to use social media. So I showed them my dogs' Instagram. Turns out they were asking about professional networking. Anyway, moral of the story is I have tenure and regret nothing.
