Reach out to as many as you want to/can. That's what they're paid to do. But if you have someone who knows the ed and who can vouch for your work make the intro, that's even better (or ask if you can name-drop), esp for the "big" presses.

Definitely reach out, especially at a press that publishes work that you respect and that compliments yours. As a senior colleague told me recently, UP editors need you as much as you need them--maybe more.
-
Exactly--had an editor remind me once that it was *her job* to find cool projects and to help authors bring them to the world. Totally changed my perspective. Good luck!!

I highly recommend reaching out. I just recommend having your ducks in a row. Offer concise sense of the book (an email version of an elevator talk), offer to send a full proposal, and provide a date by which you can deliver a manuscript if they are interested.
-
You can learn a lot from this. Most importantly, I think the way an editor responds can suggest a lot about what your future interactions with the press might be like. That's worth knowing.

In most cases, is fine to reach out directly.
-
If you have a friend who has worked with that editor directly, have them make an approach first. Gets you much further.

Reach out. I've actually never encountered an unfriendly editor (I'm sure they're out there) and in fact count several as my friends

And, for what it's worth, name-dropping or connections are completely unnecessary (at least as far as I'm concerned). Introduce yourself and your project--that's all you need to do.

Yup. Agree.
