(I know people totally hate this but) having anonymized usage analytics on open source software would help the developers sooooo much. Right now, struggling to make a decision to whether break users (without knowing how many there are) or implement a lengthy migration code.

Developers are *so* obnoxiously whiny about this though. The Atom community put up the biggest fit over this. I think that it would be far more accepted / palatable if the results were also publicly viewable, but all of the "normal" tools for this require logins

This is an opportunity: the right way to do it is an open-source data collection platform funded by a foundation, and hosted by foundation, like @linuxfoundation and/or @TheASF, with data publicly available for transparency.
