HI NEW FOLLOWERS, A QUICK PSA: - welcome - this is not a Fandom Discourse account, I’m just talking about it a lot right now for reasons - if you like what I’m doing/writing I have a bunch of expenses coming up and tips are great

  2. Please note that I’m not at all calling for that solution, it’s impossible to seriously study social revolutions and look forward to them, here is part of my desk bookshelf

  3. And the thing is I genuinely don’t have any real solution for this if it happens other than one that *will* involve a significant number of people getting killed.

  4. I just... People are worried about low turnout last night and I don’t want to panic anyone but just think it can’t possibly be overstated how much danger we’re in right now.

  6. Oh god the husband has been saying this for months and he tends to take a *very* dark view of things but that doesn’t mean he’s wrong. I mean... why should he expect anyone will stop him now? Why should he expect anyone to do anything?

  7. Please note that I’m not actually inclined to get into any arguments with anyone about whether or not the caucus was in fact RIGGED and the DNC is a collection of puppet master elites pulling all the electoral strings and cackling. So save us both time and don’t bother.

  8. Which I’m genuinely worried about, and I’m even more worried about the fact that I don’t see anyone on our side making real plans to deal with it. Remember when Nancy Pelosi straight up said she expected this to happen and the media sorta just... moved on? Wasn’t that wild?

  9. Let me emphasize again that I was *pumped* about the prospect of Bernie coming out big last night.

  10. Exactly this. Iowa is unique in a number of ways that make it not just confusing and messy but difficult to participate in for many people. Look to other states for a better picture.

  11. The “I’m not saying X is true, I’m just asking questions!” thing is classic conspiracy theory talk and it’s bullshit. I’m very disappointed to see this coming so heavily from the Bernie crowd but unfortunately I’m also not remotely surprised.

On the one hand, I agree, we must all vote or we are fucked. On the other hand if Vox is accurate here, 2016 was down literally 0.4% from the all-time high voting record in 2008.

  14. And beware of the “rigged” narrative around Iowa working to depress turnout in general, which is a genuine threat.

  15. That said, turnout is also indicative of how pumped people are. And people should be getting pumped *now*. So get people to the polls however you can.

  16. I mean... okay, the Bernie thing complicates stuff. But again, that’s a different sort of terror. Maybe Dem institutional elites view Bernie as an existential threat but I’m guessing they’re a tiny minority? Look, my point is that this is just different.

  17. The mood in midterms and special elections is very different from the mood in a primary, at least I’m noting a real difference between them and *this* primary. I don’t think anyone is turning out to vote for Elizabeth Warren because they’re terrified about someone else winning.

  18. This was an election in significant part about choosing what the Democratic party is going to look like going forward, which people are passionate about, but I think it’s a quieter, more complex kind of passion than CRUSH THE REPUBLICANS

  19. People have strong preferences for Bernie, Warren, Klobuchar, etc., but I haven’t gotten the sense that people with those preferences tend to view the other candidates as *enemies,* which matters. I mean, I sure don’t.

  20. I think we shouldn’t discount the fact that for a huge number of voters who aren’t on Twitter all these candidates don’t look *super* dramatically different from each other, which means this was an election in which everyone is basically in agreement.

  21. There are a number of reasons to not assume lower turnout than expected in this one very odd primary-that-is-not-even-a-primary is indicative of what turnout in the general will be like, but THIS As many people as possible must must MUST vote or we’re fucked.
