  1. Such dramatic conversations I have with myself when in my cups! Like a teenager (well, myself as a teenager, out on a long walk, trying to pin myself down on things, while wrangling with the snares of self-deception)!

  2. By "work things" I mean boozy events rather than calamities that are driving me to booze

  3. Drinking, because of work things, and posting; noticing the character of drunk-posts; posting some anyway; hastily and probably wisely redacting others.

  4. This is probably why, my actual politics (game-playing mind with unresolved malice towards society) aside, Labour isn't a natural home for me really: I have no sense of service whatsoever.

  5. I am already trying to picture the prop which soils the seats of the players' white trousers

  6. Video games probably are the reason no-one's doing sex any more. There's hardly any sex even in the video games, although I gather Geralt and Yennefer do get to "tryst" if you play your cards right.

Women are terrified of this. They have no countermeasures against the immersive experience of Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt and its excellent expansion packs

  8. The way "performative" has come by repeated usage to mean "done purely for dramatic effect, or as ostentatious social signalling", to the point where this meaning is stable and recognised, is ironically a good example of performativity in the sense Judith Butler was talking about

  9. Struck by the balance of tact and shade in her answers about whether other candidates are sincere in their left-wing positioning - the political instincts (don't get cornered into pointless personality theatrics, dig your heels in on matters of principle) are sharp.

  10. I think fwiw the reason everyone obsesses over fantasies of completely communal child-rearing is that they have that insight-porny implausibility, like imagining that what M&E meant by abolition of private property really did entail never having one's "own" toothbrush

  11. (and yes, I am acutely aware that some people's mothers are unliveable-with, and it is a good thing for escape routes to be widely and readily available...)

  12. Anyway, it's fairly clear that e.g. Marx and Engels are taking aim at bourgeois family as a nexus for the transmission of property and formation of property-holding subjects, not the fairly universal privilege given to close familial (and especially maternal) ties.

  13. People who *do* think about their intimates and relatives in this way, as property they should properly control, are what I was calling the other day "unhinged narcissists"; the attitude isn't a typical one.

  14. I think it was Alan Parker, Urban Warrior, who used to do a bit about "my girlfriend...not that I think of her as my property or anything!...", the point being that "my father/mother/brother/sister/niece/nephew" etc does not connote ownership in the same sense as "my toothbrush"

  15. The thing about "propertarian" family relations is that it's not really about children being property, it's about children being inheritors of property. The *bourgeois family is about transmission of property, and forming children as subjects fit to join the chain of owners.

  16. It's a weird amalgam - a Leavisite conception of cultural value, coupled with bureaucratic normalisation of the means of transmission of value.

  17. A sort of obtuseness at the heart of that vision, around the idea that an educational vehicle premised on selection could ever be universalised ("Grammar Schools For All!", an old Mail headline)

  18. Part of it may be that Gove-ish attachment to an idealised grammar school curriculum, seen as a great concentration and transmission of cultural value.
