Jesus. There's pushing to get the best possible results from your team, and then there is calling never getting time off a "career development opportunity" instead of, say, hiring more people to address what was clearly a capacity problem.

And re: "find another job then": when exactly were they supposed to look for one during the 18-20 hour days w/o weekends/breaks at their current one? Also, (most) urban 20-somethings do not have enough of a savings cushion built up to just quit.

I knew someone who worked for a startup and that person told me a lot of them wouldn't survive without "breaking rules" which is a pretty big indictment of the whole idea
