When developing StarFox, using 640k dos machines, we started running out of memory when compiling our code about half way through the project - in those days machine code was compiled in one massive blob, so what did we decide do?

This video shows the Knight Lore 'Sabreman' graphics on the BBC Micro being processed and packed for use by the game code. The sprite frames and masks are read from BASIC DATA statements, and rendered to the screen to ensure they are correct. These are then ready to be exported.

Here's the BBC Micro version of Crazee Rider from 1987 assembling from the original source code - requires a 6502 second processor. The final game 'executable' is 18,821 bytes in size - that includes all the code, data, graphics, audio etc. I also have 123 bytes free to play with

I thought it was like, a well-understood fact by now that most indie games on PC are sold at unsustainably low prices that make it very unlikely that you can recoup development costs (let alone fund a second project) without an outlier success?

This BTS from The Shining is so cool to watch: the blocking, the acting, the execution — right down to a bare incandescent bulb under the camera with a hand-held piece of Tough Frost diffusion. Kubrick was a genius.
