The Jewish custom of circumcision began during their Babylonian exile when Jewish leaders were keen to make a distinction between their own people and the uncircumcised babylonians. It was later added to the Bible to make it seem it was sanctioned by God
Actually the Jewish Elders were noticing infections in men from lack of cleanliness, so they decide to a decree to begin circumcision to stop infections from spreading. It was more if a health thing.
