Userbase Roadmap (Q1-Q2) 1. Allow password resets. 2. API to update user metadata from cloud functions. 3. Data sharing across users. 4. Large file storage (end-to-end encrypted). 5. Allow collecting payments from users with the Userbase SDK (no backend or cloud functions code).

The fun comes when you try something with low expectations, and it ends up succeeding anyway, “beyond expectations”. Curb your expectations. Make small bets. Farm luck.

If you squeeze all uncertainty out of life, you also remove all the upside. The highly predictable life track can at best go according to plan, and at worst unravel because of hidden risk. But add a bit of unpredictability, and things can go better than you expected (upside).

One thing to avoid is an expectation of smooth linear progress (because that will likely disappoint you). While at the month/year level the growth might look almost linear, on a daily level it's mostly flat, with occasional random spikes:

Everyone with an audience started from zero at some point. This was my start, 12 months ago:

Waiting for a good time to quit your job? The timing will never be right. The traffic lights of life will never be green at the same time. If something is important to you, just do it as soon as the consequence of failure is tolerable/recoverable & correct course along the way.

When your work is judged by your peers or teachers, you get rewarded for sophistication. But when your work is judged by your accountant's P&L, there's no reward for doing complicated things. Unlearn your bias to complicate things. It's all downside.

For someone trying to make self-employment a sustainable lifestyle, a 50% chance to make $10K/mo is almost always better than a 5% chance to make $1M/mo (despite the higher expected value). The speculative bets can be pursued after sustainability is ensured. The order matters.

Next time someone asks me how to grow an audience from scratch I’ll just redirect him to this answer by 🙌

    5. Increasing the odds of survival. If you like the self-employed lifestyle, almost all your choices should be about increasing the odds that you can keep doing this forever. You're not trying to maximize profits. You want to avoid having this lifestyle taken away from you.

    4. Opportunity is perishable. If you can’t afford to stop and think, you’re going to miss opportunities. And to benefit from luck, you must first recognize it. When an opportunity emerges, you can’t just put it on the shelf. Be ready to abandon the plan and adapt all the time.

    3. Building an audience is both easier than I thought and more valuable than I thought. Having people’s attention is a huge advantage. And I believe almost anyone can build a decent audience in 12 months. (I’ll write more about this soon.)

    2. Redundancy makes uncertainty a lot less uncomfortable. At first I thought it would be more efficient to focus on one thing at a time. Now I prefer doing a few things in parallel. It’s less efficient, but there’s a lot of comfort in having multiple things going on.

    1. Uncertainty is very uncomfortable. Even though I knew I was going to live off my savings for a while, I underestimated how tough it is to see losses accumulate month after month, and not knowing exactly when & how the losses will stop.

Almost all specific advice is survivorship bias. Instead of trying to learn how to be good at predicting what will work (validating ideas), it’s much better to learn how to stay in the game (by making small bets, not depending on one thing, adapting to new info, etc).
