I disagree that the Senators are powerless to stop him. They could if they were Americans first and republicans a distant second.
A malignant narcissist with decades of validation who rises to extreme power doesn't have ANY beliefs beyond "self." The 53 GOP Senators are pawns in his self-preservation. Malignancy is cemented into the disorder. He's powerless to control it; they're powerless to control him.

Theoretically, that is true. Practically it is not. They are politicians and he controls their base. He would have to do so much more beyond the pale, for them to act. OR - they would have to believe in the danger of his pathology, which they don't.

I hear your point, but we all have agency. Any of them could, if they wished, conclude that the country is more important than saving their political hides. After all, they all eventually retire and go on to make $ as lobbyists. And they do see what he is & the danger we are in.
