Our office began working w/ defense and judges in March to lower the jail population in light of COVID-19. Since then, the population is down by about 30%. Despite stay-at-home restrictions loosening and court operations scaling up, jail #s remain well below pre-pandemic levels.

DA Deberry says one of her first acts as DA was to implement a new pretrial release policy reducing use of money bail and reserving pretrial incarceration for serious offenses. Prior to the pandemic, the Durham jail population was down about 25% compared w/ two years before.

Since then, the population is down by another 30% and the detention facility is operating at around a third of capacity. DA Deberry says this allows for more social distancing, helping to protect detained people, staff and the community.
