Similarly, Hillary needs to stop bad mouthing Bernie all the time. Not cool. If Bernie is the candidate and Dems don't vote for him in the general they are also assholes.

It still makes sense in an efficient marketplace for these costs to be transparent in the listing and paid (by the end-user) over time rather than all at once.

There’s an important dynamic at work in the electricity market that is not often discussed, more so because it is so obvious than because it is hidden (as these things so often and unintuitively are, it seems). But I think it’s revolutionary. 1/

Calmly explaining to the Salvadoran neighborhood near me that gets regularly raided by ICE that two white British youtubers didn’t feel inspired by the Democratic Party

IMO it's much better for these costs to be baked into rent. Brokers fees are almost never communicated clearly up front, making it difficult to price compare apartments efficiently. This way seems superior.

One really disruptive consequence is questioning how much reliability from grid service a customer my want once they have reliability/resiliency resources of their own. This will disrupt concepts of universal reliability standards for all customers, treated as a right today.

"I don't care about the immediate and grave threat to undocumented people posed by another Trump term." "I don't care about Trump having a good shot at appointing another Supreme Court Justice, which would be terrible for women's and LGBTQ rights." What an asshole.

Fascinating FERC decision Monday evening: rejected Genbright's waiver request to get 14 DERs (7 solar, 7 storage) into ISO New England's capacity market (FCA14). Based on one of my favorite questions: which DER interconnections are FERC jurisdictional?

DERs offering resilience fits the disruption framework. Started with tech that's bad in traditional metrics, but has a unique trait (diesel gens for resilience). Then it got better and better ( CHP -> solar -> storage -> microgrids) to the point where it's a real threat.

To say “only” is, perhaps your way of saying that resilience structurally moves the foundation of underlying energy market theory and we are not prepared. Utility reform conversations that ignore that (ahem ahem HAWAII HAWAII) rise to the level of folly.

Now we have solar, storage, and microgrids. They leverage the resilience value proposition, work for way more facilities, and readily compete with incumbents on cost.

Energy resilience started as diesel generators. They were relatively cheap but didn't do much for you other than provide resilience. Then CHP came along and began to compete with utilities using resilience as it's key unlock. But it only applied to a handful of facilities.

Testing a thought: Energy resilience is the only disruptive thing about distributed energy. It fundamentally reframes the energy value proposition in a way incumbents can't incorporate. Everything else is just competing on costs.

"We need both" is the key part. Unicorns have a way of sucking the oxygen out of the room so to speak, and all the clean software startups in the world won't push an electron from a wind farm to a dryer without a transmission line.
