It's impossible to love someone you disagree with when you secretly believe they need Jesus more than you do.

A woman contracts coronavirus and falls ill. The gospel is shared with her. She puts her trust in Christ. Then dies. Her testimony and the gospel is shared at her memorial service which was broadcast online. Several more people put their trust in Christ.

About as true and depressing an assessment of the state of our republic—and of greatest concern to me, the place of virtue, or lack thereof, within it—as you’ll find:

Some kinds of public "prayer" do more harm than good (Matt 6:5; Luke 18:11-12).

It is only by believing in God that we can ever criticize the Government. Once abolish the God, and the Government becomes the God. ... Wherever the people do not believe in something beyond the world, they will worship the world. G. K. Chesterton, 1932

Political identity now drives religious identity, far more than it used to. Churches [like universities] are losing their ability to expose people to diverse political views within a friendly community. (From Michelle Margolis):

In our present cultural moment, Romney’s appeal not only to his faith, but also, and more pointedly, to the public oath and promise he made “before God,” is remarkable. Surely he intended that emphasis to serve not only as personal testimony but also as prophetic rebuke.

It's a sad and frightening thing when theological and political conformity and uniformity is clamored after -- or groomed and demanded -- out of a deep craving for personal acceptance, belonging, and identity. We are all susceptible to this.

Character—not competence, ‘calling,’ or capacity to draw and mobilize a crowd—must be fiercely guarded as the primary qualification of Christian leadership if the ministries they lead and serve are to be healthy.

“....learning to think with the best people, and not to think with the worst, is so important. To dwell habitually with people is inevitably to adopt their way of approaching the world, which is a matter not just of ideas but also of practices.” — Alan Jacobs in How to Think

"If we were surely persuaded of this, that men’s hearts are controlled, and guided by the secret inspiration of God, we should not so greatly dread their hatred, and threatenings, and terrors, nor should we be so easily turned from the path of duty through fear of them." (Calvin)

Iain Murray's essay "'Expository Preaching'–Time for Caution" (2010) has been examined/critiqued. Yet his emphasis on paying attention to effectiveness and purpose is worth heeding. Doing expository preaching *effectively* is harder than often advertised.

A man was sitting alone, on a bench in a park, singing Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer by himself. By the end, the entire park joined along to sing with him. (🎥)

What a comeback, congratulations, Kansas City, well-deserved. Now that you’ve won the —triumphant, secure, on top of the world—how about you make some fresh changes, ban the chop, chants, and maybe even ‘chiefs’...?

6/ It is not going to be long before we can so sing the story to the outside world as to convince it of the value of our history and our traditions, and then we are going to be recognized as men." Carter G. Woodson, 1922
