  2. Fontaine on presidential policy: "A candidate that becomes president has to decide what he is going to deliver on and what he is going to cast aside."

  3. Fontaine on candidate policy: "Once you become the nominee, you have access to intelligence briefings. The issue is that every hour you do that is an hour not on the campaign trail."

  4. Fontaine on McCain's legacy: "He was super sarcastic. We went to the South Pole together, and he signed a photo of us there to me with 'This is where you belong. From, John.'"

  5. Fontaine on McCain's foreign policy legacy: "There are two main things in his legacy. In 2006 and 2007, there was a big push to withdraw forces from Iraq. He pushed to fully fund a counterinsurgency strategy. Also, he pushed to stop CIA black site programs."

  6. Fontaine on democracy in other countries: "I hear the argument a lot that other countries aren't ready for democracy or are religiously incompatible with it. You should determine what the people want and then determine a strategy. Often these claims are proven wrong by polls."

  8. Fontaine on War Strategy: "The Gulf War is a good example of how to do some things right. The Iraqi Army collapsed so quickly that there was a discussion about whether or not to push to Baghdad. They were criticized for not pushing until 2003 when we saw what that looked like."

  9. Fontaine on resonating with voters: "I don't think some foreign policy is what people specifically vote for in an election."

    Poništi
  10. Fontaine on making policy: "You have to demonstrate to people why a policy is actually in the interest of the American people. That goes out the window in Washington in all of 2 seconds."

    Poništi
  11. Fontaine on lessons from foreign policy: "One lesson is that it always can get worse. It can always get worse."

    Poništi
  12. Fontaine on regime change: "Regime change should be an extremely rare goal of American foreign policy."

    Poništi
  13. Fontaine on Libya: "The lesson is 'don't topple a government if you're not prepared to deal with the aftermath for a long period of time'"

    Poništi
  14. Fontaine on the bipartisan agreement: "You see the reasons [to withdraw] differ, but the result is the same."

    Poništi
  15. Fontaine on bipartisan agreement on stopping military engagements: "Republicans say, 'We need to reposition ourselves to combat China, and, as long as we are dragged down in the Middle East, we can't.' Democrats say, 'We need to focus on domestic policy.'"

    Poništi
  16. Fontaine on his piece for Foreign Affairs: "If you look at all the many things that divide the president from the Democratic candidates, you would be remiss to not notice a similarity that they seek to end the 'forever wars.'"
