Reminder: E3 is an unnecessary cringefest. It exists solely for business investors and retail partners. It does not exist for you and me. It has everything to do with money, and nothing to do with art. We'd be better off if more companies just did Directs like Nintendo.

I have spoken to many passionate developers, large and small, on the floor who are so excited to show off the beautiful things they've made to so many people for the first time who would vehemently disagree with this assessment.

I think there are plenty of valid criticisms of E3 but to completely dismiss it as having nothing to do with art is a huge disservice to a lot of folks who worked incredibly hard to present their work there.

I'm glad for the comment. What I've seen of E3 is just the biggest companies overshadowing any other news with a bunch of filler and lies.

E3 press events are the big announcement bits for the folks at home. E3 itself is the three-day floor show. Again, it's not above criticism for one thing or another, but one of its primary aims is still for devs to show off their art.

My impression: E3 exists to assure Wal-Mart that they will be able to occupy shelf space with more soulless pieces of plastic like Call of Opsfield: Nazi Raid Reach 14. But I don't have numbers to back up this impression. So I'll stop badmouthing E3 on Twitter without evidence.

E3 is just the largest of a lot of different large press events and floor shows throughout the year. Aside from sheer scale and the hype the community generates, what's worse about it than other, similar events?

I don't know what other shows you might be referring to. I can't think of any that have E3's pretense to putting art first while actually putting business first. Probably because I'm more emotionally invested in the artform of gaming, so E3 subjectively rankles me more.

Business goes on at most major gaming shows. PAX, GDC, name it. It's still an industry. Commodification of art is something gaming's always going to have to reckon with. Whatever you dislike about E3's presentation doesn't change the opportunity it offers artists who are there.
