it's wild that at literally any point CD Projekt could've just said "hey we're so fucking sorry, we overestimated, we need more time with this, it'll be done when it's done and we'll give a new date when we know, we're sorry" and everyone would've been bummed but understanding

So much of this can be traced back to a decision made nearly a decade ago. They announced the game in 2012 with a trailer that probably took months to put together so work on that probably started in 2011. Announcing that far out built it up to be a mythic release

IDK, this all kind of assumes there was ever the chance for Cyberpunk to be a good game. My take is that (unlike Witcher) leadership had nothing to say about the genre besides "future = sexalot", and that without a clear POV, there was never going to be a game here.

I think that's probably true, but here I'm mostly considering mainstream reception. I'm pretty confident that if the game functioned well and looked good then the more nuanced and interesting critical opinions would remain just that: nuanced and interesting, but not widely shared

They really fucked themselves saying a 3 week delay would fix things. If they did 3 months people would have been mad but the game would have had actual time to fix the glaring issues rather than the thin layer of duct tape there now. Launch would have been infinitely better.

I distinctly remember the first advert I saw for Cyberpunk back in like 2013-2014, where it ended “Coming...When It’s Ready.” And if they (again, the leadership) would have kept that same energy they wouldn’t be in this predicament.

I think the problem was the scope was too high and it infected all aspects of the game (tech, story, animation, marketing, PR, sound/music). If they had just dialed it down 25% across the board and stayed quiet until it was ready, things would have been much better.

I genuinely believe no game in history went for it as much as Cyberpunk 2077 did. They just...they wanted it to be everything. And they came up short because they didn’t manage expectations.
