This brings up something that's been on my mind on and off: How do you all feel about kids being forced to learn an instrument? My parents, particularly my dad (who's a guitarist) felt like arts are a matter of heart and soul. Long as I tried, my art grade didn't matter. https://twitter.com/buitengebieden_/status/1310629443602350080 …

I took to writing by myself. It was just something I was compelled to do as soon as I knew some words. I see parents and teachers try to force kids into loving books and writing stories, and I feel like it's something you can't push.

tl;dr I would not force my kid to learn an instrument or take up an art unless they showed clear interest.

I wish there was an easy way to let kids trial art things without spending a ton of money. Musical instruments and lessons are expensive commitments, and I have found having learned an instrument valuable, but I hated a lot of it and wish I could've had more choice in it.

THIS. My school had a decent music department with an OK range of instruments (I played clarinet!), but way too many kids have access to nothing but recorders in school (shudder)

high five fellow clarinet player! I went through piano, harp, and viola before I finally found clarinet and LOVED it. I wish I could've started clarinet sooner without miring through the other stuff I hated.

(my mom was also a music teacher though so I assume I got it a bit weirder than most kids)
