It probably didn't help The Last of Us 2's reception that it inflicts deep trauma and misery on characters that the games wanted players to feel attached to in 2020, when most people already get all the misery and darkness they can stomach and more from their daily news feed

If you're already traumatized and then a fictional escape that you've been anticipating heaps on some more trauma through its fiction and what it does to characters you've come to care for i can understand how that could lead to a visceral knee-jerk response

It's not like people who consume media think very deeply and critically about why this makes them feel a certain way, it just does and they either do or don't like it, regardless of the deeper narrative reasons and themes that call for it

We've been fed grimdark bullshit since 9/11 while the world just gradually got worse every year and maybe reality is bad enough now that people are finally well and truly sick of also reveling in darkness and misery in their fiction (Personally I was sick of grimdark by 2010)

For the record I'm not making a value judgment on the game here at all, just trying to point out timing and zeitgeist may be a larger than average factor in its reception. I have literally no bone in this fight myself
